Egy XVIII. századi botanikus költő

biológia, botanika, Linné, tanköltemények

„[…] (1731–1802) – angol természettudós, költő. […] Tanulmányait Cambridge-ben és Edinburgh-ben végezte, majd orvosi pályára lépett. III. György angol király ajánlatát, hogy legyen udvari orvosa, visszautasította. Nevét párrímekben írott nagy természettudományos tankölteménye tette ismertté, The Botanic Garden (A botanikus kert) gyűjtőcímen, melynek első része Economy of Vegetation (A vegetáció ökonómiája; 1792), második része Loves of the Plantes (A növények szerelmei; 1789) címen Linné növényrendszertanát szedte jól csengő versekbe. Utóbbi művét George Canning parodizálta The Loves of the Triangles (A háromszögek szerelmei; 1798). The Temple of Nature, or the Origin of Society (A természet temploma, avagy a társadalom eredete; tanköltemény) halála után 1803-ban jelent meg. […]”

Részlet a Botanikus kertből:

“E’en round the Pole the flames of love aspire,
And icy bosoms feel the secret fire,
Cradled in snow, and fanned by Arctic air,
Shines, gentle borametz, thy golden hair;
Rooted in earth, each cloven foot descends,
And round and round her flexile neck she bends,
Crops the grey coral moss, and hoary thyme,
Or laps with rosy tongue the melting rime;
Eyes with mute tenderness her distant dam,
And seems to bleat—a vegetable lamb.”
